« Previous EntriesOn Tuesday, August 31st, I attended a seminar and two workshops on campus at Canisius College. It was so nice to see my fellow classmates after the summer break. During the summer, one of them got engaged and another one got married, which is pretty exciting. I also had a chance to drop by and [...]

My summer break has been very enjoyable, as I have spent a lot of time with family and friends doing a wide range of activities. The most recent group activity that proved to be a lot of fun was our annual Sports Day at my house. We had over twenty people in our back [...]

In last week’s blog I described the first part of our family vacation, which was a trip to Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. The second part of our vacation involved traveling to Montréal (Québec), which is truly one of the most beautiful cities in North America.

Last week I traveled to Ottawa (Ontario) and Montréal (Québec) with my family and my sister’s family for a much needed vacation. It took us approximately five hours to drive from my home in Newmarket (Ontario) to reach our first sightseeing destination, Ottawa.

Last Saturday I wrote the Content Specialty Test (CST) (Multi-Subject) for Childhood Education and I feel that I did very well. This is one of three New York State Teacher Certification Exams that need to be completed, the other two being the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) and the Assessment of Teaching Skills – Written [...]

Some of you may be familiar with the Junior Achievement (JA) organization. In fact some of you may have volunteered your time and expertise to help JA deliver its programs in the past. In addition to teaching students some basic business concepts and helping them develop leadership skills, the JA programs provide students with access to mentors who can help them obtain some very important insights into the world around them. Here in southern Ontario, I have been involved with the JA organization in one way or another, and at different levels of commitment, since 1987.

With no assignments to complete and no exams to study for, last week I kept feeling as though I was forgetting to do something important. By the beginning of this week I got used to not having to worry about any courses. I took advantage of some of the free time that I had by dropping in to see the cooperating teacher that I’ll be working with during my first student teaching placement at the beginning of the fall semester.

On Saturday I completed my Summer Semester. My research proposal in the EDU615 Research Methods course was quite a lot of work but I loved every minute of it. I learned a lot about the process of searching the available literature with respect to my topic of interest and using that information to properly structure my own research methodology.

The second and final exam in my Research Methods course took place on Saturday and I think it went well. What’s left for me to do now is to finish my research proposal by next Saturday, and then I’ll be off until I begin my student teaching in September. The proposal has been extremely interesting but quite a bit of work. I am certainly glad that I’ve been spending at least some time every day on this research, as it has made its completion much more manageable.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet with the cooperating teacher that I’ll be working with during the first of two student teaching placements that I’ll be enrolled in during the fall semester. She is very energetic and experienced, and I was impressed with how she maintains her student-centered classroom. She took me on a general tour of the school and then a detailed one of her classroom, where she teaches a grades 3&4 split class. She described how the layout of her classroom and the display of the students’ work help to create an optimal learning environment for the children. She really made me feel comfortable and I can hardly wait until we get started in September.
