Learning routines!
By Allison | February 3, 2010
Sorry this is so late this week folks; what a crazy weekend! We traveled out to Kingston, NY, for a family wedding! Good thing that I did my homework before going out there, because I’m totally unmotivated since I’ve been home. I’m getting back into the swing of things, and it feels good to be getting homework accomplished, and then life gets in the way….we have little things in life that remind us that there is more to life than school.
For me, these often manifest themselves as distractions. Those distractions can be watching movies, family occasions, holidays, jobs, and kittens. Those sorts of things come up and bring me away from what has to be done. Perhaps distractions are just our bodies way of telling us that we need to focus on something different for a while. I subscribe to the policy that, ‘if it gets done, then don’t worry about it’. I’m not really a procrastinator, but I do like to take my time getting things done. There have only been a few times in which I sat down for four or five hours doing an assignment. I like to work on it for 30 minutes here, and 45 minutes there… and in between I’ll do the dishes, or watch “The Biggest Loser.” This helps me to bring myself back into the real world and refocus my thoughts. I tend to be a ‘zoner’. I zone out if I’m not in the flow of writing or reading…. Its not the best quality on the outside, but, once you get into grad school, you’ve figured out your best method. You can figure out what works for you and what study skills are best for your learning type. I’ve always been a A and B student, and whatever I do works for me. I can take online classes because I have the independence for learning…my husband, not so much. He needs to listen to a teacher, study for 3 hours a night, and attend every review possible.
By the time we get to higher education, most of us have found out a way that works best for us to learn… So in the beginning of this semester, I advise you to get into a routine that helps you to become successful.
Until next time!
