Competition…
By Sam | February 5, 2010
This week was a fairly light week although I’m sure things will start to pick up more and more. Classes went by quickly starting with the History of High Ed class. In this class we watched Chariots of Fire. Sandy was away on business but class was still held so that we could see the movie. After this we all ate dinner together and headed to our Diversity class.
The class started with a couple of activities led by a second year CSPA student. We all gathered in a large circle and wrote down three things that represent ourselves. The papers were then jumbled up and passed back out so that they could be read aloud. It was interesting to hear how my fellow classmates view themselves and how many are feeling at this point in the semester. The next activity was again about how you identify yourself. We were asked questions like “Are you a woman? Are you a man? Are you African American? Are you Native American? Are you a Feminist? Are you a Republican?” and so on. Every time you identified with one of the questions you stepped into the circle. This exercise helped us to get to know each other even further, as well as touched on how different we are from one another. The activity illustrated how different the students we will be interacting with may be from us and how we should recognize and issues relating to diversity. The class then continued, led by our professor, and we went into how our identities have been shaped. The class ended with a brief discussion of the book we are reading, And Still We Rise, in which most of the class, if not all, agreed that this was a very interesting and enlightening book.
The following day the first years had our Research class. We started the class by sharing potential research topics with a partner and then discussed a few as a whole. We then went into the specifics of our draft due next week and how to go about writing the introduction, purpose and research questions.
Currently, at my internship, my project, which is developing videos to put on the website, is coming along. We now have video footage from this past ‘Keep the Cup Week’ that will kick off our video collection and show prospective students about life here on campus. The undergraduate accepted student portal, called The Griffin Experience, was launched earlier this week and seems to be off to a good start.
My classes and internship seem to be progressing at a steady rate that allows me to put my energy into another area… stressing about my future internship and assistantship. It is very difficult to hang out with your friends and hear about the assistantships and internships they want and know that you will be competing against them for that very same position. For now I am trying to stay positive and calm my nerves by concentrating on homework, work itself, and fun times with my friends in the program.
