Check out our Intramurals on campus!

By Ben | February 5, 2010

My placement for the EDCH 570 course has already introduced me to the concept of shared teaching duties by two teachers.  I’ve been placed in a grade 3/grade 4 split class at a public elementary school in Newmarket (Ontario), where one teacher teaches five days a week in the morning and the other one teaches five days a week in the afternoon.  So far I’ve met with the two teachers to discuss how we can ensure that my participation in their classroom will meet my requirements for the course and how to deal with some of the students in their class.  We have drafted a schedule that specifies my attendance, and I have assured them that I will help them in any way that I can on the days when I’m in the classroom.  I also met with the school principal, who welcomed me to her school and was very cordial towards me.  She indicated that between now and the end of June, there will be a total of eight college students in her school’s classrooms to do their pre-student teaching just like I am.

As you may be aware from reading some of my past blogs, I commute 2 ½ hours from a town north of Toronto every Monday morning and I drive back home every Monday night.  Unfortunately I have been unable to become involved in any athletic extracurricular activities at Canisius College over the past five months because I have always either been in class or too far away to participate in intramural events.  So you can imagine how happy I was when I received an email from one of the Intramural’s coordinators, Dustin Zampogna, informing me that intramural co-ed handball would be starting up on Monday evenings at the Koessler Athletic Center, with the early games beginning at 7:30 pm and the late games beginning at 9:00 pm.  Since my last class on Mondays ends at 7:00pm, I jumped all over this opportunity and signed up.  We had our first game on Monday night, February 1st, and I loved it.  It has been an eternity since I last played handball, so I actually had to look up the rules to remind me how to play the sport, including the fact that teams consist of six attackers and a goalie.  I was placed on a team with some really fun teammates, including Dustin and Jeff, who work at the Koessler Center and also played on our team, and who were very supportive and encouraging with everyone.  I can hardly wait until next week’s game.

Many students, including me, will be rushing to get as much homework done as possible by Sunday morning, which will allow us to go to Super Bowl parties in the afternoon and evening.  On Sunday afternoon, regardless of how cold it might be and how much snow will be on the ground, I’ll be going outside with some family and friends to throw the football around and play a short game, just so we can all get even more psyched up for the big game.  Although a Saints win would be a great human interest story and would do wonders for the people of New Orleans, I think that the Colts are clearly the better team overall and will win by a comfortable margin.

Until next week’s blog, enjoy Super Bowl Sunday, and feel free to reply to this entry.
