“If I don’t practice the way I should, then I won’t play the way that I know I can.” – Ivan Lendl
By Julianne | February 6, 2010
Hey everyone! Hope you’re having a good week. Personally I’m loving the fact that it’s Saturday and I can let my brain relax a bit. I say a bit because I still have an 18-month-old running around at home and probably shouldn’t turn my brain off completely!
This week was an interesting one for me; Thursday evening in particular. As I’ve mentioned before, every Thursday night I have my EKG & Stress Testing class. I’ve expressed how this class has got me feeling a little overwhelmed…just by the amount of information and the requirement to diagnose numerous EKG print-outs. Crazy! This past Thursday, instead of strictly working in the classroom, we learned how to place EKG leads (or sensors) on another person. It was a nice change from the normal routine, but also a little scary! Learning where to place the leads will take time and a ton of practice! Like anything else, you can’t be expected to really, truly learn this stuff unless you’re constantly doing it. As a student of this course, I am required to do a practical-type final where I must give someone a stress test and, not surprisingly, placing leads on someone is a big part of that! If we don’t put the effort in, we will be the only ones to suffer for it in the end. Why do that to ourselves?
It’s funny…I have this almost preconceived notion in my head that ‘practice’ is not a pleasant thing. I keep picturing a younger me being forced to practice the piano every day (of course now I regret not continuing with that!). How in the world do you remedy that? Or is it more of finding something you love to do…something that doesn’t seem like a chore when it comes to practicing. I really think it’s more the latter — loving what you’re doing and wanting to achieve your goals. Our professor encouraged us to practice with the EKG leads as much as we can and I definitely want to put the effort in! Not only do I want to do well in the course, but more importantly I desire to walk away with the knowledge and confidence needed to perform this task.
In about a month, we’ll be having another ‘hands on’ class. I’ve already enlisted my husband as a guinea pig to practice on until then. A few of my other friends/family have volunteered as well to help me, which is awesome! I’ll have to keep you updated on how everything is going.
Lastly, I want to ask for your advice! For my Nutrition course, I am required to read and critique a current diet book. If you have any suggestions on a book and/or a new diet, please let me know! I’d love to hear your opinions on that stuff as well. It’s something we’re all confronted with in one way or another. Thanks guys!
