2nd Semester Pre-Student Teaching
By Nick | February 3, 2010
Hello all, still getting into the swing of things here in the Graduate Physical Ed program; it takes a few weeks for me to get used to being back in classes and doing all the work. We just got assigned our pre-student teaching placements and I am in Cheektowaga High School, the same place where I coach. A really nice part about Canisius is they are very accommodating when it comes to requests in areas to be placed. Since I coach at Cheektowaga, I asked Clancy Seymour, the man with the pre-student teaching plan, if I could be placed there. Without hesitation he responded, “Sure! I’ll set you up with Mike Fatta, a graduate of a program from a few years back.” Mr. Fatta is one of the football coaches at CCHS and a really good guy so I’m looking forward to starting either this Friday or the next.
Speaking of Cheektowaga, my basketball team finally got back on track winning Monday night in East Aurora, 63-50. Then we had practice yesterday at 2:30 pm, one that I could not attend because I work in the Dean’s Office until 5:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and, apparently, in walked a gift from overseas. A 6’4″ senior guard from New Zealand came strutting into our practice hoping to be on the team. Just from brief observation, he was making every shot he took from 3′s and was dunking with ease, one of our coaches said that from his short showing he thinks if we had him all year he might be an All-WNY candidate. I would hope so, considering he told us he was on the New Zealand 17 & Under National team. My fellow coaches asked the athletic director if it is okay for him to join the team mid-season and he said he did not see a problem with it and will check with Section VI (WNY’s High School Athletic section) officials.
In my Exceptional Student online class about children with disabilities, I need to come up with two hypothetical students, one with a mild disability and one with a severe disability. I am not very familiar with children with disabilities and would like some help in choosing what disabilities I could give them that would make my project the most interesting. Any suggestions?

I took that course last semester, the hypothetical situations can be any students that you know about. The more you know about them the better, but you will go on to learn about the disbilities, design lessons for them, and learn a little bit about how to include them in your classes. Your hypothetical situations can simply be any child that your observe or teach, or you can use one of his examples! Good luck and feel free to get a hold of me if you need more help.
Fyi- I did a student with autism and a student with cerebral palsy.
