100 Days and Counting
By Shawn | February 11, 2008
The thrill of our trip to NYC during Christmas break is still fresh in our minds, but Campus Ministry was nice enough to host a Winter Service Week reunion party a couple weeks ago. It was nice seeing everyone again. Funny how we go from spending an entire week together to transiently passing each other around campus.
It seems that the semester has already been full of get-togethers. Last Thursday evening the school’s senior week committee hosted the annual 100 days party. This gathering of graduating students marks the symbolic beginning of the end. In about ninety some odd days we will all be Canisius College graduates and moving onto bigger and better things. From this point on all hearts and minds will be set on graduation, obtaining employment, and getting accepted into graduate school. About two weeks ago the Department of Admissions hosted a brunch for high school students who have been awarded one of the top two academic scholarships, the Presidential and Ignatian. As I sat at my table with two prospective students and their families I reflected on how I felt during my senior year of high school. There was so much anxiety and excitement in the air as I checked the mailbox everyday waiting for acceptance letters and financial aid awards. Now, applying to graduate schools, I feel the same way. I do give a lot of credit to these high school seniors though as they navigate the waters of the college admissions process and as they weigh their options when it comes to selecting a place that they’re going to be spending the next four years.
These last few days Buffalo seems to have greeted old man winter with arms wide open. The outside air temperature is hovering in the teens with a wind chill in the below zero range. I can’t say I’m surprised though. Everyone warned me that Buffalo would be colder than anything I’ve ever felt before. Don’t be too turned-off because along with the cold comes fun too. Many of my fellow students have recently been sledding, skiing, building snowmen, and just enjoying the warmth of all that Buffalo has to offer.
