A Personal Note on the 60-Second Talks

By Joel | November 23, 2009

Last Tuesday, November 17th, I had the utmost privilege to witness before my eyes a vision I have always had throughout college, a dialogue/conversation between different and at times conflicting perspectives on a wide range of issues. Along with the Honors Student Council and the All-College Honors Program, I was able to spearhead this project which brought four very distinguished professors in the Canisius community to talk about current problems we face from the ongoing healthcare debate to Afghanistan and to the future of the college, among others. One caveat though in these talks was that each professor had to answer a question in 60 seconds or less. I was surprised that in some cases, they didn’t even take the whole time and opted to answer a few questions very succinctly. That in itself is a quite a feat, eh?

Even though it has been a few days since the event, I can’t help but still wonder at how successful the event was! It certainly surpassed my wildest expectations and I bet that of others too. Some members of the Honors Student Council even told me that they were “pleasantly surprised.” I appreciated it a lot when people came up to me and said how much they enjoyed and liked the event. It just warmed my heart because after a long time of waiting and all the effort that we as a council put into it, we were able to reap the abundant fruits of our labor. In fact, even our panelists liked the event and there were talks during the reception of making this an annual Honors project. Wow!

It feels so good to end my college career in such a high. This is my last semester here in Canisius since I will be studying abroad in the spring to El Salvador and the 60-Second Talks was the last big event that I organized. And so for it to be received that way that it did is just, well, very humbling. Alas, my vision of a dialogue in the college came true and it did with tremendous success! Thank you to all who came and to the following people and offices: Honors Student Council, Justin Massucci, Dr. Dierenfield, Dr. Chadwick. Dr. Christian, Dr. Galie, Dr. Loughead, Events Management, CCTV, Media Center, Chartwells and the Print Shop. AMDG!
