September 3, 2010
The FacTS Center has partnered with eInstruction to support the CPS Wireless Student Response system on campus.
The CPS system is open to a variety of uses. Faculty members can use it to poll students in their class and quickly receive group answers. Administrative staff can use it for larger group meetings or seminars for the same purpose. The system allows students and meeting participants to interact with the instructor or leader in a wide variety of ways, and is an especially wonderful way for faculty to engage students in class.
Those wishing to utilize the CPS system are eligible to receive a free receiver for use in the classroom or meeting. The clickers are available for purchase in the bookstore along with other course supplies.
For more information, please contact Chris Filkins in the FacTS Center (CT-003) at Ext. 8353. Please note – eInstruction CPS is the only “clicker” hardware/software currently supported on campus. For any concerns or questions regarding other clickers, please contact Chris Filkins in the FacTS Center.

Specialized training sessions will be held beginning October 29 with a three-week “Mission Softchalk” seminar for all levels of users ranging from beginners to advanced users.
Softchalk is available to all faculty and staff. For information about Softchalk and the October 29 training sessions, click here.

September 2, 2010
From Scott A. Chadwick, PhD, vice president for academic affairs
Welcome back to campus and the new academic year. This year promises to be an exciting and significant year for Canisius. Kicking off the start of the Celebration of Spirit, we will celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit today at 1:15 p.m. This Mass has been a traditional way for Catholic schools to start the academic year since medieval times.
Continuing our tradition of inclusion, all faculty, staff and students are encouraged to participate. Freshmen, residence hall floors and student clubs have been personally invited to participate in the Mass. There will be a trumpeter’s call to order for students in the residence halls at 12:30 p.m. Faculty will gather in the Old Main Faculty Lounge to don regalia, and then process onto the Quad to arrive in front of Christ the King Chapel by 12:55 p.m. At 1 p.m., Rev. John Bucki, S.J., Katie Eldredge (president of the Undergraduate Student Association), and I will say a few words to our new students and others in attendance. Then, we will process to the Montante Cultural Center (MCC), led by a bagpiper and faculty members. Faculty and staff will line the entryway to MCC to honor and greet the students. In the event of rain, faculty will gather in the rear of MCC to process into the facility.
I personally invite you to participate in this event. It is crucial for our students to see and know that faculty and staff will join them in celebrating the start of the new academic year. It is also important for the campus community to come together and celebrate as part of our enduring campus culture.
Any faculty member in need of regalia should contact Michael Raham, manager of the Canisius Bookstore, at rahamm@canisius.edu or Ext. 2336 as soon as possible. He will arrange for regalia to be rented for you.
Classes that meet from 1 – 2:15 p.m. are to be cancelled unless in the judgment of the teacher it would create an exceptional burden for the particular class. Professors whose classes overlap or extend beyond the time period are encouraged to make it possible for students to participate in the Mass, and should use their own discretion with regard to holding the class. In any case, please advise your students in advance whether your class is a special case and needs to meet during the Mass of the Holy Spirit.
After the Mass, all are welcome to a barbecue in the Quad. The barbecue is sponsored by the Campus Programming and Leadership Development Office, the Student Programming Board, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the offices of each of our vice presidents.
I look forward to seeing you this afternoon.

September 1, 2010
New York State
After a delay of more than four months, the State Legislature completed action on the 2010-2011 budget in early August. Working to close a gap of more than $9 billion, the budget cut several billion dollars in spending while also raising taxes and fees by more than $1 billion.
Cuts impacting Canisius students included the following:
- An across-the-board cut in all Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards of $75. In the past academic year, more than 1,400 Canisius students received a TAP award.
- The elimination of Graduate TAP awards.
- Various minor changes in TAP that tightened satisfactory academic progress requirements; eliminated TAP eligibility for loan defaulters; and reduced TAP awards for married students.
- A two percent cut in Bundy Direct Aid to colleges, which Canisius uses for student aid. The budget cut will reduce Bundy funds received by Canisius by approximately $9,000 this year.
Part of the state budget process also included nearly7, 000 appropriation vetoes by Governor Paterson, including two grants affecting Canisius: a $25,000 appropriation for the 2010 NCAA basketball tournament; and an $8,000 appropriation for the college’s Literacy Center. Reimbursement claims have been submitted on both appropriations, however, and the college will receive the funds.
The Federal Budget
As President Obama and the Congress work on federal spending and deficit issues, the Pell program that provides financial assistance to students has become part of the discussion. Because of a larger number of students who are eligible for Pell awards, and because student and family economic conditions in many cases result in higher individual awards, a shortfall of approximately $6 billion has developed in total funds available for the program. While the funding shortfall could result in a reduction in Pell grants, that outcome is not seriously anticipated at this time.
